India’s Largest Community-Driven Sterilization Program
Maitri – CUPA Spay & Neuter Centre for Community Cats is a key part of India’s largest community-driven sterilization initiative, built on an inclusive, participatory model. Unlike traditional, labor-intensive animal welfare programs, our approach actively involves members of the public in every stage, from trapping community cats and transporting them to the centre for surgery, to ensuring their post-operative recovery and safe release.
This model not only reduces operational costs but also empowers citizens to take an active role in improving animal welfare within their own neighborhoods. It fosters a sense of shared responsibility and compassion, making urban animal care a truly collective effort.
What Are Community Cats?
Community cats are free-roaming cats that often live in and around human spaces, finding food and shelter in backyards, streets, and public areas. While they do not have individual owners, they depend on humans directly or indirectly for food and care.
Many residents naturally develop a sense of responsibility toward these cats, providing them with food, vaccinations, and participating in sterilization through the TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) approach.
The CUPA TNVR program supports and strengthens this growing movement, making community involvement structured, humane, and impactful.
Stakeholder Collaboration
This program’s success rests on the collaboration of multiple stakeholders:
- Murty Trust – providing the foundational infrastructure that made Maitri-Cupa Centre possible.
- Members of the public – who actively participate and fund the initiative through individual contributions.
- Corporate partners – including HELP ANIMALS INDIA USA, Bosch Global Software Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Tally Solutions Pvt. Ltd., and AXA XL India, who consistently support the program through CSR funding.
Together, these partnerships sustain and expand the reach of India’s largest community-driven sterilization program, ensuring long-term welfare for community cats and safer coexistence in our cities.
Health Benefits of Sterilization and Vaccination
Sterilizing and vaccinating community cats brings significant health and welfare benefits. It:
- Prevents reproductive cancers and deadly uterine infections.
- Reduces roaming, fighting, and disease transmission.
- Increases overall lifespan and quality of life.
- Lowers behavioral issues like aggression and territory marking.
- Helps prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases such as rabies, safeguarding both animal and human health.
Through these measures, Maitri – CUPA Spay & Neuter Centre for Cats, continues to build a compassionate, sustainable, and science-backed model of community cat care, one that protects public health, promotes animal welfare, and strengthens the bond between people and the animals who share their spaces.
Our Impact
Since 2018, the Maitri -CUPA Spay & Neuter Centre for Community Cats has sterilized and vaccinated over 7,256 community cats across Bengaluru (as of September 2025).
Through the collective efforts of community caregivers, volunteers, and local residents, the centre has helped control the stray cat population, improve feline health, and promote peaceful coexistence between people and community animals.
With the continued support of citizens, welfare organizations, and corporate partners, the centre remains committed to expanding this humane, community-driven sterilization model to reach even more neighborhoods across the city.
